Celebration, Christmas, Easter and Ascension

Lilies and Stars

I wanted to create a design which is a celebration of Christmas and Easter, full of joy and jubilation and majesty. The impression is of ringing bells and starbursts.

I have chosen White Easter Lilies and Star-of-Bethlehem Lilies.’ Cultivated lilies were always white (Virgil first named them Lilium candidum) and their luminosity was enhanced by the shining golden stamens and the wonderful but intangible scent.

By the time lilies were adopted by renaissance artists, their association with spirituality and purity was absolute’

Flowers of the Renaissance, Dr Celia Fisher.

Star-of-Bethlehem Lilies, Ornithogalum umbellatum have a six-pointed star in the centre, which I have echoed with scattered stars in the design, signifying ‘Heaven come down to earth’.

The six-pointed stars are constructed from the Star of David.

There are 12 stars in each of the double panels, which reference :

And there appeared a great wonder in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars. Rev 12.1[/wpcol_1half_end]
